Clontech can't be happy

In a review written by well-known neuroscientist Roger Tsien and his colleagues, Clontech was mention as “(f)or example, the newly released DsRed-Monomer (Clontech) is described as “bright,” even though in fact, it is the dimmest monomeric red fluorescent protein (RFP) presently available.”

Unfortunately, the review is titled “A guide to choosing fluorescent proteins” (doi:10.1038/nmeth819, the review is subscription required).

BIND.CA 关闭

缺钱成为各种生物信息学数据库的最大问题。最近蛋白质相互作用数据库 BIND.ca 关闭。下面是网站负责人贴出的通告:

16 November 2005

Important Notice Regarding BIND Curation and Web Services.

(c) 2005 Christopher Hogue. Reproduction without Permission is Prohibited.

As of today the Blueprint Initiative has fully expended available core funding in both Canada and Singapore.

No further funding is available at this time, and as a result, Biomolecular Interaction Network Database (BIND) curation activities has been terminated. Journals and partners have already been notified of this change.

Remaining Blueprint Initiative staff members are making every effort to implement the BIND curation wind down in an orderly manner, and to maintain web servers and services in a stable state. Response to info e-mail queries and to user-submissions to the BIND database will be limited or delayed due to staffing shortages.

As Principal Investigator of The Blueprint Initiative I would like to thank my host institution Mount Sinai Hospital, my Scientific Advisory Board and my entire research team who delivered on the Blueprint Initiative’s promise. I would also like to thank historic Blueprint Initiative funding agencies, partner institutions, collaborators and commercial sponsors who are listed at blueprint.org.

With extraordinary on-going support from Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Blueprint Initiative products and services such as BIND and the data warehouse SeqHound along with many other resources will continue to be made freely available on an open access basis.

Finally, I would like to reiterate my conviction that public databases are essential requirements for the future of life sciences research. The question arises will these be free or will they require a subscription. Should BIND/Blueprint be sustained as a public-funded open-access database and service provider?

Feel free to write me at chogue@blueprint.org with your thoughts.

Yours sincerely,

Christopher W.V. Hogue, Ph.D.

同学们,解放你的食指

在PubMed上搜索,然后通过点击各种链接最后获得那个PDF文件是我们每天的工作。实在是无聊啊。今天终于看到解决这个问题的软件了。QUOSA。“If you regularly use PubMed, OVID, Google Scholar, or other scientific journal “gateways” , then QUOSA can save you a lot of time.”

PLos BiologyUltrasonic Songs of Male Mice
